This is a contemporary photograph of Bluie West, a stopover airfield in Greenland for the B-17 and other aircrews flying to England. Bluie West is situated at the end of a fiord flanked on both sides by mountains. It was a difficult field to land in because there was another fiord nearby and it was easy to get confused and follow the wrong fiord in lousy weather.

The Howard Traeder Crew spent a couple of weeks there in January 1945 as their B-17 had a mishap on takeoff. See Bluie West One (BW-1) by Howard Traeder.

In July 2004, John J. Mc Cormick wrote that he went ashore on BW1 with the US 62nd C A (A A). He stated that there was only land there and everthing for the base had to come off the ships.

Joe Reveman, Radio Operator on the Howard Traeder crew provided this photo to Lee Anne Bradley, 398th Group Historian. If you would like to add information about this photo, please contact our 398th Photo Historian. Please mention the title.
