Below are listed books, CD's, and videos that contain information about the 398th, B-17s or the Army Air Force in WWII. There are two listings. In the first list, the publications all contain some information about the 398th. Some of the books in this list are by 398th veterans and others by 398th relatives. Some of the authors have provided links to their web sites or e-mail accounts. The second list contains publications relating to the Army Air Force and/or B-17s but have no specific mention of the 398th. Note some publications may be out of print, and viewers are on their own in finding these titles.

Statistical History of 398th B.G. CD 398th Bomb Group Memorial Association Publication A two CD 398th compilation of thousands of scans of day-to-day records of the 398th Bomb Group during 1944-1945. The information was provided through a cooperative effort with the U.S. Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA). Previously this information was only available on numerous microfilm reels. May be available in the 398th PX in 2008.
Heavy Bombers of the Mighty Eighth Andrews & Adams, 8th Air Force Memorial Museum Foundation
A Diary of the First Combat Wing on CD-ROM Gordon Alton This is a comprehensive report of the three bomb groups (91st, and 381st, and 398th) from their start in '43 until the end of hostilities. In a note from Gordon, he says "I will be glad to send out a copy of my CD to anyone who is interested. I charge $10 for the total package, including shipping. All of the money collected goes into an account that helps with research or worthwhile 8th AF projects. I do all I can to keep the memories alive." Gordon Alton

The History of the 398th Bombardment Group (H) Lt. Colonel Earl J. Berryhill, Army Air Corps, Deputy Commandant of Troops, Newsfoto Publishing Co., 1945 The original was leather bound. The original was only sent to those who were with the 398th at the end of 1945 in Florida before it was decommissioned. The names are listed at the end of the book. FORTRESSES OVER NUTHAMPSTEAD Cliff Bishop, East Anglia Books This 271 page book, published in late 2004 is focused on the 398th Bomb Group from 1943-1945. Included are missions flown, photos of aircraft, maps and diagrams. Now available in the 398th PX.

B-17 Nose Art Gallery John & Donna Campbell, Motor Books Out of print
Bird of Prey Marvin Coffee Mr. M.W. Coffee was a 398th Bomb Group pilot and member of the 602nd Squadron. Now available in the 398th PX.
Flight of the Kentucky Colonel Hollis Dalton (deceased) Mr. Dalton is a 398th Veteran.
8th Air Force Remembered Fox, ISO Publications Shows the memorials at the bases, and some old photos. Could be out of print.
World War Odyssey, Pennsylvania Dutch Farm Boy Becomes 8th Air Force Navigator Bill Frankhouser, Noyes Publications, ISBN:1-883912-03-2, and L. of C. Number 97-71215 The book begins on a farm in 1941 and graduation from high school. Next is an enlistment at Penn State as a Cadet in the Army Air Corps. Highlights of his training follows. The 30 missions flown in the 398th Bomb Group are discussed individually, including survival of three plane crashes. The book finishes with an assessment of the effectiveness of the German bombing campaign in shortening the war, and a recent investigation of the murders of his crewmates in Germany.

Mr. Frankhouser, a 398th Veteran has also contributed a number of chapters from his book to our 398th Veteran's WWII Personal Histories Section.

Flying Blind M.C. (Buddy) Wagner, Jr., ISBN: 9781410710086 Mr. M.C. Wagner, Jr. was a 398th Captain and former 603rd Squadron Flight Commander and 603rd Squadron Operations during late 1943 until August 1944. The book covers the period from his Air Cadet Training, through the initial formation of the 398th in Blythe, to Rapid City, to Nuthampstead to his return to the USA after his capture and escape after bailing out on 8 August 1944. The Last of the Combat B-17 Drivers (Weekley) Colonel Harold D. Weekley, USAF (Ret.) and James B. Zazas, Atlas Books, 2007 Mr. H.D. Weekley was a 398th Bomb Group pilot and member of the 601st Squadron. Now available in the 398th PX.
