  3. Aircraft in photo: unknown, propeller only in view
  4. Photo Date: 7 May 1944
  5. Photo Location: Nuthampstead
  6. Photo Reference No.
  7. Caption from July 1994 Flak News: General William Gross (right) commanding officer of the 1st Bombardment Wing, was on hand at Station 131 to greet Colonel Frank P. Hunter and the 398th when they returned from Berlin on [May] 7, 1944. Among those listening in to the conversation are Jean Miller of the 603rd and Col. Earl Berryhill (right)
  8. Note Colonel Hunter's flying boots that indicates he flew that day.
  9. Colonel Hunter flew on the 398th's first mission to Sottevast, France on May 6 and to Berlin on May 7, the 398th's second mission. The 398th did not drop their bombs on May 6th due to bad weather, clouds obstructing target, so while the photograph is labeled May 7, first mission, it could well be that it was not officially counted until later and it was thought that May 7 was the first mission at the time of the photograph.
