602nd's Evans' K8-M and 398th Readying for Takeoff - 26 September 1944

Information about this photograph:

  1. Aircraft No: 42-107094
  2. Tail Letter: M; Fuselage ID: K8-M
  3. Group/Squadron: 398th, 602nd
  4. Official Name of Aircraft:
  5. Date of Photograph: probably 26 Sept 1944
  6. Photo Location: Nuthampstead
  7. Crew at time of Photograph: Evans
  8. Final Disposition of A/C:
  9. Interpretive Comments: The B-17 in the foreground is the 602nd's K8-M. However, there are 4 other B-17s readying for takeoff. From the viewer's left to right these are:

    1. N7-C (603rd): pointed toward the right of the photo and just to the right of K8-M. With magnification, its fuselage can be seen as labeled N7 and its tail letter appears to be C
    2. N8 (600th): slightly to the right of K8-M with its #4 engine visible and part of its fuselage number visible. The number appears to be "N" and probably the bottom of an "8" or the 600th's N8.
    3. B-17 with no lettering visible: directly behind K8-M.
    4. 3O-H (601st): behind the unidentified aircraft and turning behind it.

Perhaps the sum of this data will one day allow identification of all the aircraft numbers.
